Turning 65 · Lancaster County, PA

Turning 65 in Lancaster County? Start here.

If you're approaching 65, Medicare can feel like a wall of letters and deadlines. It doesn't have to. Here's a plain-English starting point for Lancaster County, and when you're ready, a local agent who will walk you through it at no cost.

Your timing

When your Medicare window opens

For most people, Medicare eligibility begins at 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window around your 65th birthday: the three months before, the month of, and the three months after.

We recommend reaching out shortly before your enrollment window opens so we can schedule your appointment. We will plan to meet near the start of that seven-month window, to ensure your coverage is in place exactly when it needs to be.

That window fits many people, but not everyone. If you're still working, or covered by a spouse's plan, your timing can change. The honest answer is that it depends on your situation, and that's exactly the kind of thing we'll sort out with you.

The basics

The pieces of Medicare, in plain English

Original Medicare is a federal program, and it comes in two parts. From there, private plans help fill the gaps. Here's the quick version.

Part A

Hospital

Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay no premium for Part A.

Part B

Medical

Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium set by Medicare.

Part C

Advantage

An all-in-one private plan that bundles your coverage, often including prescriptions and extras, through a network.

Part D

Prescriptions

Standalone drug coverage that adds to Original Medicare, with a different drug list and cost for each plan.

Part A and Part B (the highlighted cards) together make up Original Medicare. Parts C and D are private coverage you can add on top.

There's also Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap), which pairs with Original Medicare to help cover the costs it leaves behind. You can read more about each option on our services page.

Your two main paths

Two ways to round out your coverage

Once you have Original Medicare, most people choose between two directions.

Original Medicare + a Supplement

Pair Original Medicare with a Supplement (Medigap) and a Part D drug plan for predictable costs and the freedom to see any doctor that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the country.

A Medicare Advantage plan

An all-in-one plan, often with extras like dental and vision, that works through a network of providers. We check that your local doctors are covered before you decide.

Neither one is automatically better. The right path depends on the doctors and hospitals you want to use, your prescriptions, your budget, and how much you travel. In and around Lancaster, that often means checking whether your providers at systems like Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health or WellSpan are covered by a given plan. We'll help you compare the two side by side.

Prescriptions

Don't forget your prescriptions

Prescription drug coverage (Part D) is easy to overlook, and the right plan depends on the specific medications you take. Each plan covers a different list of drugs at different costs, and the best fit can change from year to year. We compare plans against your actual medication list so your prescriptions are covered as affordably as possible, and we re-check it each year.

Still working?

Still working at 65?

If you're still working and have qualifying coverage through your employer, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. We'll look at your employer coverage and Medicare side by side and help you make the right call, so you never miss an enrollment period or face an unnecessary penalty.
