Medicare Advantage vs. Supplement: how to choose in PA

Once you have Original Medicare, most people in Pennsylvania choose between two directions: a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan. Neither is automatically the right answer. Here is how they differ in plain English, and when you are ready, we will help you compare them at no cost.

The two paths

Two ways to round out Original Medicare

Original Medicare is a federal program made up of Parts A and B. Most people add private coverage one of two ways.

Original Medicare + a Supplement

Pair Original Medicare (Parts A and B) with a Supplement, also called Medigap, plus a separate Part D drug plan. You can see any provider that accepts Medicare, your costs are predictable. There are no additional plan networks to check.

A Medicare Advantage plan

An all-in-one plan from a private carrier that bundles your hospital, medical, and usually prescription coverage, often with extras like dental and vision, through a local network of providers.

A Supplement and an Advantage plan are different tools, not better or worse versions of the same thing. One gives you wide freedom of providers and steady costs. The other bundles everything together, often at a lower premium, in exchange for working within a network. The right choice comes down to your life, not a rule of thumb.

What to weigh

Three things that usually decide it

When we sit down together, these are the points we work through with you.

Your doctors

With a Supplement you can use any provider that accepts Medicare. With Advantage, care runs through a network, so we check that your Lancaster doctors and hospitals are in it before you decide.

Your prescriptions

Drug coverage is built into most Advantage plans and added separately alongside a Supplement. Either way, we compare the plan's drug list against the medications you actually take.

Your budget and travel

A Supplement trades a monthly premium for fewer costs at the point of care. Advantage often has a lower premium with copays as you go. How much you travel or split time out of state matters too.

In and around Lancaster, the doctor question often comes down to whether your providers at systems like Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health or WellSpan are in a given Advantage plan's network. With a Supplement, that question mostly goes away, since any provider that accepts Medicare has to accept payment from your supplement plan. We check the specifics either way so there are no surprises later.

How the costs work

Premium now, or costs as you go

The two paths spread your costs out differently, and one is not simply cheaper than the other.

A Supplement usually means a higher monthly premium in exchange for very predictable costs when you actually use care, which many people find easier to budget around. A Medicare Advantage plan often has a lower premium, but you pay copays and coinsurance as you receive services, up to a yearly limit. The question is less about the total and more about how you would rather pay it, and what fits your situation.

One thing worth knowing early: you can change plans during certain enrollment periods, but moving from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Supplement later can involve health questions, depending on your timing. That makes your first choice worth getting right. We will walk through how it applies to you, so you are never guessing.
